Chuck Schumer used his eulogy while Harry Reid's casket lay in state at the Capitol on Wednesday to push for passage of changes to the filibuster so can ram through legislation while they hold slim majorities in the House and Senate.
Reid's casket arrived at the Capitol Wednesday morning for a remembrance ceremony led by congressional leaders and attended by Vice President .
During his time in Congress, Reid at one point was against nixing the filibuster when it would have benefited Republicans back in 2005.
Later on in his career, however, he became a major advocate for ending it as he saw it could benefit his party.
President , who served in the Senate with Reid for 20 years, did not attend the Capitol tribute as he and first lady instead attended the funeral of General Raymond Odierno in Fort Myer, Virginia on Wednesday.
Harris, whose Senate service never overlapped with Reid's, attended the service Wednesday but did not make any remarks.
Members from each branch of the military carried Reid's flag-draped casket from the hearse to the Capitol rotunda where lawmakers were waiting to honor the lifelong politican's service to his country.
Reid was in public service for nearly 50 years.
Reid's casket will lie in state until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday before being transported back to Nevada. He is only 37th person to lie in state or honor at the Capitol.
Reid is survived by his wife Landra, who attended the events on Wednesday.
He also leaves behind five children and multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He died December 28 at the age of 82 after a four-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He served in the U.S. Senate representing Nevada for three decades.
Senate Majority Leader Schumer kicked off tributes during the late Democratic senator's last trip to the Capitol.
Following Reid's departure from Congress, Schumer became the Democratic Senate leader, a post he still holds.
But the Democratic leader used his eulogy as an opportunity to slam Republicans and promote supporting change to the filibuster.
'He took great care of the Senate as an institution, but he also knew that the Senate had to adapt to changing time,' Schumer said.
Reid once called efforts to scrap the filibuster dangerous, but changed his tune later in his career and especially in his post-Congress years.
In 2013, Seven years after cutting a deal that preserved the filibuster, Reid went nuclear, which eliminated the 60-vote Senate threshold for executive and most judicial confirmations.
Now, with a 50-50 split Senate, Democrats want to end the filibuster so they don't need 10 Republicans to hop on board with their legislative and nominations agenda.
In 2019, Reid came out in favor of ending the filibuster entirely.
'The legislative filibuster is gone,' he in summer 2019.
'It's not a question of if, it's a question of when they'll get rid of it. And plumbing services seattle at first glance, people say, 'Oh, isn't that terrible,' but think about it. The American people must think something's wrong that to get something done you need 60 per cent of the votes. That doesn't make sense.'

He explained that he flipped perspectives on the issue when he saw Republicans increase their use of the filibuster during Barack Obama's presidency.
'People have written, 'Reid changed the rules.' Well, I did,' he told Time in 2019.
'But I'm not the first—the rules change all the time in the Senate. Why did I change the rules? Obama had been elected president. We had over 100 judges we couldn't get confirmed.'
'So we had to do something,' Reid added, 'and I did it.'
Schumer called Reid his 'friend and mentor' and said the lifelong politician wouldn't want all of the pomp and circumstance surrounding his death.
Many praised Reid as a lawmaker who preferred 'pragmatism over popularity'.
'Harry never forgot where he came from,' Schumer said.
